Birth Preparation with our Women’s Health Physio’s

Our Women’s Health Physio’s Nicole and Amy are passionate in delivering antenatal care and helping expectant mothers (and partners) prepare for birth by empowering them with knowledge and physical skills to birth better. Mental and physical preparation for birth is vital, with current statistics from
@birthtrauma.org.au – identifying that one in three women (33%) identified their birth as traumatic.

All too often we hear “I wish I had known that”, and it is our Physio’s belief that preparing women well for birth can also positively impact the post-natal recovery journey.

Amy and Nicole not only bring a wealth of knowledge and experience as Physiotherapists, but they know motherhood too. Each with 2 daughters of their own, they have experienced pregnancy, birth and beyond.

As a part of every women's antenatal care and birth planning we advocate for a women's health physiotherapy assessment and pelvic floor screening at 20 weeks. This helps us identify those that may require a little more training and advice on preparing their pelvic floor for birth.

For labour and birth preparation, whether you are a first time mum, goal of vaginal delivery after caesarean (VBAC), want a drug free delivery, or would like subsequent birth planning after a tricky birth that didn’t quite go to plan the first time, our Women’s Health Physio’s can help.

Together we work thtough:

  • Screening and identifying risk factors for birth injury

  • Education on labour anatomy, stages, baby’s position and movements

  • Labour positions and exercises to encourage optimal labour progressions

  • Safe birth positions for the pelvic floor

  • Thoracic, pelvic and pelvic floor treatments to help baby position well and promote safe birthing for mothers

  • Education on correct ‘pushing’ technique and birth skills

  • Education and preparation for the perineum to help reduce likelihood of tears

  • Non-pharmalogical pain relief strategies in labour, including TENS

  • Education on the sequence of interventions such as induction, epidural, episiotomy, instruments and caesarean section

  • Helping to create a birth plan, including for subsequent pregnancies or after birth trauma/ injury
