Is your child school ready before starting kindergarten in 2023?

You’ve probably considered your child’s ability to count and draw but can your child do the following movements;

•   Climbing confidently

•   Skipping

•   Jumping over an obstacle

•   Hopping on one foot ten times or more (both left and right feet)

•   Riding a bike (with or without training wheels)

•   Standing on one leg for 30 seconds

•   Catching and catching a medium sized ball with two hands

•   Kicking a soccer ball

There are examples of common and crucial gross motor skills that are necessary so that your child can keep up with their peers and learn effectively.

For example, a child’s ability to maintain appropriate table top posture (upper body support) will affect their ability to participate in fine motor skills (writing, drawing and cutting) and sitting upright to listen to class instruction.

Gross motor skills also impact on a child’s physical endurance in coping with a full day of school (carrying a heavy school bag, sitting upright at a desk, walking to and from playground to classroom).

If your child hasn’t solidified the skills above, come see our physiotherapist Emma for an appointment and advice on how to prepare for the school year ahead.
