Concussion - Not just a Sports Injury

Summer is here and it’s a great time to be active outdoors or take part in sports like basketball, cricket, netball and soccer. However as we all know, there is always a small risk where we can get injured and.. sometimes injured a little too hard. Concussions can happen anywhere, at any time and we don’t need to be playing a sport to sustain a concussion. It could even be as simple as tripping forwards and landing on the floor head first or running into door real hard

It is important to recognise the possibility of a concussion as the incident unfolds and to seek help as soon as possible. This is crucial because ‘waiting to see how things turn out’ over the coming 1-2 weeks can significantly prolong the recovery time, especially if it turns out to be a concussion. It is never too early to have a thorough assessment (which can take up to an hour) for a suspected concussion.

Some symptoms to look out for in a suspected concussion may include:

  • Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head
  • Temporary loss of consciousness
  • Confusion or feeling as if in a fog
  • Amnesia surrounding the traumatic event
  • Dizziness or "seeing stars"
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Delayed response to questions
  • Appearing dazed
  • Fatigue
